This riveting documentary drama, restored in HD and available for the first time on DVD, explores the life of Canada’s most prominent 19th century painter: German immigrant Cornelius Krieghoff. Renowned for his storybook imagery of daily life among the Natives and “Habitant” pioneers who lived in rural French Canada, Krieghoff’s paintings are full of joy, humor, mystery, lavish color and beauty. His works primarily document the amusement and harshness of French Canadian winters depicted in the Dutch-miniature style of painting which Krieghoff brought with him from Europe.
One of the very first films made by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Kevin Sullivan, Krieghoff is a rare glimpse into the mind of a Victorian artist who made Canada famous around the world with his romantic images and lithographs, still beloved on Xmas cards and calendars today. With music by John Welsman (Anne of Green Gables, Road to Avonlea), Krieghoff is an inspiring story of the heartache and joy of an artistic genius.
